There are a lot of us who are fond of smartphone apps. Most are extremely easy to download or install. What if, there is an app that can be used to harm, such as an app that can hijack an airplane remotely, how unsafe will you feel?

In the Hack in the Box security summit in Amsterdam, Hugo Teso, a German security analyst and licensed pilot, shared on Wednesday that he have spent three years constructing SIMON. Teso explains, that SIMON is a framework of malicious code that can be utilized to exploit airplane security software. He adds that SIMON can be activated using an Android app which he calls PlaneSploit.

Teso told Forbes “You can use this system to modify approximately everything related to the navigation of the plane,” and adds after the presentation “That includes a lot of nasty things.”

He further explained to the crowd that the tools could be utilized to alter the pilot’s display screen or shut the cockpit’s lights. Teso designed SIMON to only work on virtual environment and not on a real aircraft.

As Teso developed this dangerous technology, he has also informed the relevant bodies so that precautions and steps can be taken to fix any vulnerabilities before anyone with a more dangerous intention can develop the same technology. via [CNN Edition]
