Warning! Exposure To Plastic Can Cause Heart Complications To Children And Teens

Plastic is everywhere and we use them all the time. Its value can range from being house hold products to food wrappers. I can just imagine the concern after the recent study showed that plastics can actually cause health complications to children and teens.

For plastic to be flexible, manufacturers add a chemical, termed as Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). ‘Journal of Pediatrics‘ published researchers’ new study, indicating that this chemical can raise blood pressure of children and teens in which may lead to heart complications. The researchers who found this connection are from NYU Langone Medical Center, University of Washington, and Penn State University School of Medicine. Researchers acquired the evidence after studying 6 years worth of data on 3,000 children and teens

According to the CDC, the chemical or Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) can be found in car upholstery, shoes, some toys, shower curtains, garden hoses and up to 40 percent of vinyl products.

CDC explains some information on how humans can absorb DEHP. One is getting exposed via air, water or skin contact with plastics containing DEHP. Our food wrapped in plastic may contain DEHP yet researchers are not sure how much of the chemical the food can contain.

As most plastics contain DEHP, the best thing we can do now is limit exposure especially to plastic products that are new since they tend to have more DEHP than old ones. via [Decoded Science]
