Fake tweets are as powerful as authentic tweets. They can have the same multiplying effect which is why they can cause a lot of damage. While you can delete a tweet, it is possible that it is already out there even though you made an effort to delete it as fast as you can. You can perform a follow up tweet to counter your first yet that tweet may not be seen by the same people.

CNN sited many examples of how powerful fake tweets are. It reported a hacking incident that happened to Associated Press’ twitter account on Tuesday. While not true, the account reported that there has been multiple explosions at the white house, hurting the president. In just a few minutes, the tweet was retweeted 3,000 times before twitter can deactivate the account.

CNN shared about the journalist that set up a fake twitter account in August 2012 and tweeted that Syria’s president had been killed. This news caused some fluctuations in the oil markets.

In Thursday night during Boston’s manhunt, a tweet mentioned a brown university student as one of the suspects. A name was specified and many readers believed it was true even though authorities had not confirmed it.

CNN also shared about a certain fake tweet that went viral and it had caused a lot of worries and concerns from people who read it. It is about a teenager in New Jersey that tweeted there was an intruder in her house and asking people to contact 911.

Information can spread many times faster than before. While there are many social network sites that contributed to this development, there is a special mention on Twitter’s capability.   via [CNN]
