Lance Whitney of CNET shares a report from a market research firm known as The NPD Group about iTunes topping  the charts in online video sales.

Last year, Apple got a 66 percent of the total sold TV shows and 65 percent of the total movies sold, making them the top seller. Second place goes to Amazon where it has 14 percent of the total TV shows sold in the internet. Amazon and Xbox video both have the 10% of the total sold feature length film online in 2012.

Apple iTunes also has the 45% share of the overall online movie rentals. Amazon’s Instant Video has 18 percent, while Vudu has 15 percent.

Russ Crupnick shares in CNET that Apple leveraged the popularity

“iTunes, iOS, and the popularity of iPhone and iPad to dominate the digital sale and rental markets for movies and music,” Russ Crupnick adds “While worthy competitors have come along, no other retailer has so thoroughly dominated its core entertainment product categories for so long.”
